HOUSE BY HOUSE IN WESTBOROUGH

Westborough is the town on our route where we see the most different kinds of plumbing in a single week. It wasn’t built in one wave — it grew in rings, and each ring has its own kitchen. Here’s what we find, block by block.

Downtown Westborough & the Historic District

The Victorian-era and early Colonial homes around the center run on the oldest pipe in town — galvanized supply that’s past a century old, cast-iron drain stacks, and kitchens that started as pantry corners or lean-to additions. Tight under-sink spaces, long flat drain runs, and shutoff valves that haven’t been turned in forty years. When we open a wall downtown, we’re usually looking at two or three generations of past repairs holding hands.

The Ranch & Split-Level Belt

The ring of ranches, capes, and split-levels from the 1950s through the 1980s is hitting a wall right about now — every original kitchen fixture and length of copper or galvanized has simply reached the end of its useful life. Faucets that are original to the house, disposals from the Nixon era, and dishwashers that have been repaired three times too many. This is our bread-and-butter replacement work.

The Suburban Developments & Cul-de-Sacs

The newer colonial developments off the side streets have modern PEX, real shutoffs, and code-compliant everything — so we mostly see installs there, not emergencies. But those builder-grade faucets and disposals installed ten or fifteen years ago are now failing one at a time, and a kitchen reno in a school district with nearly 4,000 students usually means upgrading the sink, the faucet, and the disposal all at once.

The Condos, Townhouses & 55+ Communities

Westborough has more multi-unit stock than the rural towns around it, and condos and 55+ buildings carry their own rules — shared wet walls, common shutoffs, tight under-sink clearances, and an HOA that sometimes wants a licensed plumber’s name on the work order. We’re used to that. We’ve done kitchens in the major complexes in town, and we know which ones are slab-on-grade and which have accessible basements below.

The Commuter & Route 9 Edge

Close to the rail and the 495 corridor, the housing turns over more — young families moving in, kitchens getting renovated before move-in, and landlords flipping older capes into rental units. Fast-turnaround work, same-day availability, and knowing the code. That edge of town is more “get it done before the moving truck shows up,” and we’re set up for it.

The Kitchen Business...

Richard T. Curley Plumbing & Heating has handled kitchen plumbing in Westborough since 1980. Same-day service for kitchen faucets, sinks, garbage disposals, dishwashers, gas stoves, washing machines, and dryers. We never sell you something you don’t need. Call (978) 562-3736.

Kitchen Sinks and Drains...

Kitchen Sinks… We install single-bowl and double-bowl stainless steel sinks, cast iron, and composite. If you’re doing Corian or granite countertops, we coordinate with your countertop installer for under-mount sinks — stainless or Corian, both take specific mounting hardware.

Kitchen Drain Problems… For drain problems: leaks in the trap, a strainer basket that won’t seal, a P-trap that’s rusted through. We fix all of it. If you’ve been pouring drain cleaner into a slow sink for weeks and it hasn’t helped, stop. We’ll snake it properly.

In the older split-levels and ranches from the 1950s through the 1980s, the kitchen drain runs long and nearly flat to reach the main stack, just like the old colonials. That flat slope is why so many Westborough kitchen sinks clog on a regular basis — and it’s a venting problem, not just a clog, when the remodel didn’t fix the grade.

Kitchen Faucets...

Kitchen Faucet Problems… Dripping, leaking at the base, handle that spins without turning the water on — we can repair almost any kitchen faucet as long as parts are still available. If the valve body is shot or the finish is worn through, replacement costs less. We stock parts for Delta, Moen, and Kohler on the truck. We can also order any faucet you pick out and install it same-week. If you want a pull-down sprayer, a touchless sensor, or just something that doesn’t drip, we’ll walk you through what fits your sink and your budget.

The older split-levels and ranches often have a four-inch center-set hole pattern in the sink, so a big single-handle pull-down won’t always drop straight in. We carry adapter plates and we won’t force a fixture that doesn’t fit the holes you already have.

Garbage Disposals...

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… We install new disposals where none existed before — which comes up a lot in Westborough’s older ranches that still have a strainer basket. We replace worn-out units. We repair jammed disposals that buzz but don’t spin, and dead ones that don’t make any noise at all. We carry InSinkErator and Waste King, and we can install any brand you choose. Most of Westborough is on municipal sewer so there are no septic restrictions — disposals are fine everywhere in town.

The older split-levels pack the kitchen onto a tight run, and the condo and 55+ buildings have shared wet walls, so a new disposal or dishwasher has to tie in carefully or it’ll siphon the trap. We check that before we mount anything.

Dishwashers, Gas Stoves, Washing Machines, and Dryers...

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.

The older colonials and splits often have dishwasher drain lines tied into the sink drain with a saddle fitting. Those work but clog faster than a dedicated tailpiece. If your dishwasher drains slow, we can convert it during the new install.

Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.

Some of the downtown colonials still have original gas shutoff valves from decades ago. We’ll test the valve before connecting anything to it. If it won’t seat fully or shows corrosion, we’ll tell you and swap it out.

Washing Machines and Dryers… You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine — an unlevel washer walks across the floor during the spin cycle. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.

For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe properly. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run as short and straight as possible. Sharp bends trap lint, restrict airflow, and double drying time.

Basement laundry hookups in older homes sometimes have floor drains that haven’t seen water in years. We’ll pour water through the trap and confirm it’s open before you start your first load.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plumbing in Westborough

Most faucet replacements run between $250 and $500 including labor. The exact cost depends on the faucet you choose and whether the shutoff valves under the sink are in good shape. In Westborough’s older split-levels and ranches, those valves are often seized from age, so if they need replacing that adds a little. We give you a firm quote before we unscrew anything.

Almost always the P-trap has gone dry or the garbage disposal is holding old food sludge. The trap is a water seal that blocks sewer gas; if the sink hasn’t run in a while or the trap leaked, the seal is gone and the smell comes up. A disposal needs a good cleaning — ice and running water helps. If it’s a dry trap from a floor drain nearby, that’s a ten-minute fix. We’ll find which one it is.

Yes — and we do it a lot in Westborough’s older ranches and split-levels that still have just a strainer basket. We add the disposal, the switch, and the drain tie-in; in the older homes we watch the venting so the new disposal doesn’t siphon the trap. In-town homes on municipal sewer are fine; out where the houses run on septic we’ll check it first.

Usually the plumbing, specifically the drain line. In Westborough’s older homes the dishwasher drain was often tied into the sink drain with a saddle fitting, which clogs faster than a dedicated tailpiece. If the line’s clear and it still won’t drain, then it’s the pump. We’ll narrow it down in one visit.

Most often it’s the age of the pipe, not the faucet. Westborough’s older ranch and split-level neighborhoods still have galvanized supply sections that have corroded from the inside and choked the flow, so a new faucet won’t fix it. On the well side of town, a clogged aerator screen from iron sediment will do it. We figure out which one it is before we start swapping parts.

It can be — hardness varies by neighborhood, and plenty of MetroWest homes see mineral buildup on faucets and fixtures over time. If you’re scrubbing white scale off the faucet or the dishwasher’s leaving streaks and spots on the glassware, that’s hardness doing it. We can install a water softener or filtration system, and we’ll match it to your water so it’s not oversized. If the buildup’s already choking the flow, we’ll clean or replace the aerator while we’re there.

Yes, but know what you’re signing up for. Moving a sink means relocating the supply lines and the drain line, and the farther it moves from the existing stack, the more work — and cost — is involved. The hot request in Westborough’s remodels right now is an island sink, and those are very doable, but the vent and the drain slope have to be run just right or it’ll clog and gurgle forever. We’ll tell you honestly what your space will and won’t handle before any walls come down.

Yes — and this is one of the best cheap insurance moves in an older Westborough home. If the valves under the sink are corroded, stiff, or won’t turn all the way, replace them before they matter. The cost of a new valve is nothing compared to the damage when one fails mid-emergency and you can’t shut the water off. When we’re in for any kitchen job, we’ll point out which ones owe you nothing.

It depends on the work. Simple fixture swaps — a new faucet, a new garbage disposal — usually don’t need a permit. But moving plumbing lines, adding fixtures, or making significant drain changes does, and it’ll need an inspection. The rule we follow: if it’s a swap, we handle it; if it’s a change to the system, we make sure it’s done to code and permitted properly. You don’t want to find out about a skipped permit when you go to sell.
