Berlin is well-water country from end to end. No municipal lines, no treated supply — every kitchen in town runs off a private well. That means every kitchen faucet, every sink drain, every disposal deals with the same thing: iron, manganese, and fine sediment that comes straight out of the ground and into your pipes. We’ve been working on Berlin kitchens since 1980 and we know the water here. It’s hard on fixtures but predictable — which means we can recommend what lasts and what doesn’t.

Berlin’s homes are spread out. Long driveways, larger lots, pipe runs that stretch from the well pump in the basement to the kitchen on the far side of the house. Pressure drops over distance. Sediment settles in the low spots. By the time the water reaches the kitchen faucet, it’s moved through a hundred feet of pipe and picked up whatever was sitting in it. We account for all of that.

Kitchen Sinks and Drains...

Kitchen Sinks… We install single and double-bowl stainless steel, cast iron, and composite sinks. For Corian and granite countertops, we work alongside your installer for under-mount mounting. Berlin well water makes sink selection important. White porcelain and light-colored composites show rust rings fast — and Berlin’s iron levels leave stains that set in quick. Stainless steel hides them best. Composite granite in dark colors is a good second choice

Kitchen Drain Problems… Slow kitchen drains in Berlin are sediment buildup, plain and simple. The minerals settle in the horizontal sections of drain pipe, the diameter narrows, and one day the sink won’t empty. We snake the full line. Pour-in cleaners don’t touch the kind of scale Berlin water leaves behind.

Kitchen Faucets...

Kitchen Faucet Problems… In Berlin, a kitchen faucet that drips is almost always a cartridge full of mineral deposits. The iron and calcium in your well water settle on the O-rings and the moving parts inside the valve. Over time the seals fail and the drip starts. We can swap the cartridge and stop it — as long as the valve body isn’t corroded underneath. If the valve is pitted from years of hard water, replacement is the cheaper long-term fix.

We recommend ceramic-disc faucets for Berlin kitchens. No rubber washers for minerals to attack. They cost a little more upfront and last twice as long between repairs.

Garbage Disposals...

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… New installations, replacements, jammed-unit repairs — we handle all of it. Berlin homes are on septic, so the disposal you pick matters. We’ll recommend a septic-safe model and tell you what stays out of it: grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, potato peels, celery strings, pasta, rice. The disposal grinds it fine but your septic tank still has to digest it. Treat the disposal as a convenience, not a second trash can, and your septic system won’t push back.

Dishwashers, Gas stoves washing machine and dryers...

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.

Berlin note: Berlin’s fine well sediment clogs dishwasher inlet screens faster than any other town we serve. If your dishwasher fills slow or fills with low pressure, the screen is packed. We can clean it or swap the fill valve if the screen is too far gone.

Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.

Berlin note: rural Berlin homes on propane need the stove set up for propane, not natural gas. The orifice size is different and the pressure is different. If it’s not converted correctly, the burners will soot up and the flame won’t burn clean. We’ll make sure it’s right.

Washing Machines and Dryers… You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.

For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe to code. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run short and straight to avoid lint buildup.

Berlin note: Berlin’s iron-heavy water can stain the washer drum over time. If your cold water supply runs through an iron filter, the washing machine gets cleaner water. If it doesn’t, white loads will show a yellowish tint eventually. We can talk through the water treatment options when we’re there.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plumbing in Berlin

Berlin runs entirely on private wells. The groundwater here carries dissolved iron and manganese — minerals that deposit on rubber seals, O-rings, and moving cartridge parts every time the faucet runs. Over a few years those seals fail and the faucet drips. Municipal water is treated and filtered before it reaches the home, so the wear is slower. In Berlin, ceramic-disc faucets are the best defense.

Every two to three months. Berlin’s fine well sediment fills the aerator screen quickly, and once it’s partially blocked the water pressure at the sink drops off. Unscrew the aerator, rinse the screen, and screw it back. If you’re cleaning it monthly and the flow is still weak, the buildup has moved past the aerator into the cartridge itself.

Yes. Choose a septic-safe model and follow the rules: no grease, no coffee grounds, no eggshells, no potato peels, no celery, no pasta. Grinding food waste into the septic tank adds solids the system has to break down. Be smart about it and the disposal won’t cause problems. We’ll help you pick the right unit for your setup.

The pipe itself is narrowed by mineral sediment. Pour-in drain cleaners dissolve organic clogs — hair, grease, soap — but they don’t touch the kind of iron and calcium scale that builds up from Berlin well water. The scale has to be mechanically removed. Our drain cleaning reaches the full length of the pipe and restores the original diameter.

Dissolved iron in your Berlin well water. When the water hits air, the iron oxidizes and leaves rust-colored stains on the sink surface. The stains set faster on white porcelain and light-colored materials. Stainless steel hides them best. A whole-house iron filter tackles the problem at the source — we can talk through your options.

Probably. We measure the pressure at the well tank and at the kitchen faucet and calculate how much you’re losing over the pipe run. If the supply lines are old galvanized steel, they’ve narrowed with rust and replacing them with PEX or copper can restore full pressure. If the pressure tank cut-in setting is too low, adjusting it may be enough.

Yes. All of Berlin — including homes on the outskirts and properties with long driveways set back from the road. Our trucks are stocked with the parts we use most, so we rarely need to leave for a supply run. Same-day service applies to every Berlin address.

A dripping faucet and a slow sink drain, often on the same call. The faucet has a mineral-clogged cartridge and the drain is narrowed by iron sediment. We can usually fix both in one visit.
