Northborough is a town in renovation. Old fieldstone Colonials and 1960s ranches keep getting knocked open into brighter, open-concept kitchens with big islands — and it’s all sitting on plumbing rough-in that’s forty to a hundred years old. That’s the Northborough kitchen story, and it’s where most of our calls come from.

HOUSE BY HOUSE IN NORTHBOROUGH

Northborough didn’t build out in neat rings. It grew in pockets, one era at a time, and each pocket has its own kitchen plumbing personality. Here’s what we find house by house.

The Historic Spine

Around the center of town and along Main Street, the Route 20 corridor, Hudson Street, and Whitney Street, the homes date to the 1800s — timber-framed Colonials and old farmhouses, many with original fieldstone foundations and tight crawlspaces. The kitchen might be freshly renovated, but underneath it the rough-in can be a century old, with generations of repairs stacked on top of each other.

The Mid-Century Subdivision Pockets

Off Winter Street, Davis Street, and Rice Avenue you find the first suburban boom — the raised ranches, split-levels, and Garrison Colonials built between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s. These homes are hitting the end of their original plumbing’s service life right about now. The copper supply and original shutoff valves are pushing fifty years old, and fixtures that were installed when the house was built are finally giving out.

The Cul-de-Sac Enclaves

Carved out of old hillsides and orchards off Church Street, Crawford Street, and up toward Ball Hill, the bigger executive colonials from the 1990s and 2000s are the newest wave. Large square footage means long plumbing runs — the kitchen can sit a long way from the mechanical room, with drain lines traveling across a basement ceiling to find the stack.

The Kitchen Business...

Richard T. Curley Plumbing & Heating has handled kitchen plumbing in Northborough since 1980. Same-day service for kitchen faucets, sinks, garbage disposals, dishwashers, gas stoves, washing machines, and dryers. We never sell you something you don’t need. Call (978) 562-3736.

Northborough homeowners call us for three kitchen problems more than anything else: an island sink that gurgles and pulls the trap dry, a shutoff valve that snaps when someone tries to turn it, and a kitchen drain that’s slowly closing up with grease. Most of the time we fix it in one trip. If the fixture is too far gone, we tell you before we touch anything — no upsells, no surprises.

Kitchen Sinks and Drains...

Kitchen Sinks… We install single-bowl and double-bowl stainless steel sinks, cast iron, and composite. If you’re doing Corian or granite countertops, we coordinate with your countertop installer for under-mount sinks — stainless or Corian, both take specific mounting hardware.

Kitchen Drain Problems… For drain problems: leaks in the trap, a strainer basket that won’t seal, a P-trap that’s rusted through. We fix all of it. If you’ve been pouring drain cleaner into a slow sink for weeks and it hasn’t helped, stop. We’ll snake it properly.

The open-concept remodels and islands are where we earn our keep. A new island sink means a longer, flatter drain run, and if the vent isn’t done right, the sink gurgles, drains slow, and pulls the trap dry until you smell sewer gas. In the bigger colonials and ranches, the kitchen drain can travel a long horizontal distance across the basement before it ever finds the stack — and that’s where grease cements and the line slowly closes up.

Kitchen Faucets...

Kitchen Faucet Problems… Dripping, leaking at the base, handle that spins without turning the water on — we can repair almost any kitchen faucet as long as parts are still available. If the valve body is shot or the finish is worn through, replacement costs less. We stock parts for Delta, Moen, and Kohler on the truck. We can also order any faucet you pick out and install it same-week. If you want a pull-down sprayer, a touchless sensor, or just something that doesn’t drip, we’ll walk you through what fits your sink and your budget.

Northborough note: in the mid-century homes, the original shutoff valves under the sink are at the end of their life. A homeowner buys a new faucet, goes to shut the water off, and the old valve snaps or starts weeping. When that internal packing degrades, it can even send old rubber into the brand-new faucet’s cartridge and clog it on day one. We always check the valves before we touch anything, so there are no surprises.

Garbage Disposals...

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… We install new disposals, replace worn-out units, and repair jammed disposals that buzz but don’t spin. We carry InSinkErator and Waste King, and we can install any brand you choose.

Northborough note: Northborough is a mix of town sewer and private septic, and the two are not the same conversation. A disposal adds food solids to the system, and a septic system has to be sized right to handle that load — so if you’re on septic, it’s worth checking your system’s requirements and the local rules before adding or replacing one. Wherever a disposal feeds a long, flat drain run, it’s also a common cause of a sludged-up kitchen line that keeps slowing down.

Dishwashers, Gas Stoves, Washing Machines, and Dryers...

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.

A film or cloudiness on glassware is often detergent overuse, not a plumbing problem — the excess never fully rinses off. If you’re seeing scale or staining instead, that’s minerals, and the answer is usually filtration or a softener, not another rinse cycle. Testing the home’s water tells us which one it is.

Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.

Some of the older homes still have original gas shutoff valves from decades ago. We’ll test the valve before connecting anything to it. If it won’t seat fully or shows corrosion, we’ll tell you and swap it out.

Washing Machines and Dryers… You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine — an unlevel washer walks across the floor during the spin cycle. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.

For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe properly. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run as short and straight as possible. Sharp bends trap lint, restrict airflow, and double drying time.

In older homes, the laundry hookups sometimes sit over a basement floor drain that hasn’t seen water in years. We’ll pour water through the trap and confirm it’s open before you start your first load.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plumbing in Northborough

Most faucet replacements run between $250 and $500 including labor. The exact cost depends on the faucet you choose and whether the shutoff valves under the sink are still good. In Northborough’s mid-century homes, those original valves are often at end-of-life, so if they need replacing that adds a little. We give you a firm quote before we unscrew anything.

Almost always the P-trap has gone dry or the disposal is holding old food sludge. The trap is a water seal that blocks the odor; if the sink hasn’t run in a while, the seal is gone. If it’s an island sink, it could also be a venting problem — an island vent that’s done wrong lets the trap get pulled dry, and that’s when the smell comes up. We’ll find which one it is.

It’s worth checking first. A disposal adds food solids to the system, and a septic system has to be sized properly to handle that load. If you’re on town sewer it’s a simpler question, but on septic we’d recommend confirming your system’s requirements and the local rules before adding or replacing one. We’ll tell you straight what your setup can handle.

Usually the plumbing — and it’s often a partial stoppage in the long horizontal drain line, whether the house is on septic or town sewer. Grease and soap curd build up over a long flat run until the line can’t move water fast enough, and the sink backs up. If the line’s clear and it still won’t drain, then it’s the pump. We’ll narrow it down in one visit.

Usually a worn cartridge, O-ring, or valve seat. In a mid-century home, those original parts have simply reached the end of their life after forty or fifty years. We stock parts for Delta, Moen, and Kohler on the truck, so most of the time we can rebuild it on the spot.

An island sink has to be vented differently than a sink against a wall, and if that venting isn’t right, the sink gurgles, drains slow, and can pull the trap dry. It can also be a drain that’s running too flat over a long distance. That’s a plumbing-grade problem, not a clog, and it’s exactly the kind of thing we fix after a remodel.

Water hammer is the sudden stop of flowing water banging through the pipes when a solenoid valve — like the one in a dishwasher — snaps closed. Pressure in the home, a failed air chamber, or a worn pressure-reducing valve can make it worse. Over time it can loosen fittings and cause leaks, so it’s worth fixing rather than living with.

Yes — and in Northborough’s mid-century homes it’s some of the best cheap insurance you can buy. Those original valves have often been in place since the house was built, and they’re just as likely to snap as shut off the first time you try. The cost of a new valve is nothing compared to the damage when one fails mid-emergency. We’ll point out which ones owe you nothing.

Mineral buildup and scale can affect any tankless unit over time, and regular flushing is the way to keep it running clean and efficient. If you’re noticing scale or staining elsewhere in the house, a water test tells us what you’re dealing with. We’ll service the unit and recommend a maintenance schedule based on your water, not a generic guess.
