The Kitchen Business...

Richard T. Curley Plumbing & Heating has handled kitchen plumbing in Stow since 1980. Same-day service for kitchen faucets, sinks, garbage disposals, dishwashers, gas stoves, washing machines, and dryers. We never sell you something you don't need. Call (978) 562-3736.

Stow kitchens come in two flavors: the year-round homes in the newer subdivisions off Route 117, and the seasonal cottages tucked around Lake Boon. They share the same plumbing headaches — well water that chews through faucet cartridges, drains that slow to a crawl from sediment buildup, and disposals that seize up after a winter of sitting idle. We work on both kinds. Most calls we handle in one trip.

If your kitchen runs on a private well — and most of Stow does — you already know the water leaves its mark. Iron stains the sink. Sediment clogs the aerator. The faucet handle gets stiffer every month until one day it won’t budge. We carry cartridges for Delta, Moen, and Kohler on the truck. If the valve body is too far gone, we’ll tell you before we start turning wrenches.

Kitchen Sinks and Drains...

Kitchen Sinks… We install single-bowl and double-bowl stainless steel sinks, cast iron, and composite. For Corian or granite countertops, we coordinate with your installer for under-mount sinks.

Kitchen Drain Problems… Are where Stow well water really shows itself — sediment settles in low spots, narrows the pipe over time, and eventually you’ve got a sink that takes ten minutes to empty. Pour-in drain cleaner doesn’t reach the buildup. We snake the full line and restore proper flow.

Kitchen Faucets...

Kitchen Faucet Problems…A dripping faucet in a Stow kitchen is almost always mineral buildup on the cartridge or a worn-out O-ring. We can repair most faucets in under an hour as long as parts are available. If the finish is pitted or the valve is corroded from years of hard water, replacement is the better long-term move. We install pull-down sprayers, touchless models, and anything else you pick out. For Lake Boon cottages, we recommend ceramic-disc valves — they handle the off-season better than rubber-washered models.

Garbage Disposals...

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems…We install new disposals where none existed, replace worn-out units, and repair jammed ones that buzz but won’t spin. If your Stow home is on septic — common in the rural sections and around the lake — we’ll help you pick a septic-safe disposal and remind you to be smart about what goes down it. If you’re on municipal sewer in the center of town, any disposal works. We carry InSinkErator and Waste King and can install whatever brand you choose.

Dishwashers, Gas stoves washing machine and dryers...

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.

Stow note: if your dishwasher runs on well water, the inlet screen on the fill valve will clog with sediment faster than on municipal supply. We can show you where it is and how to clean it — it takes two minutes and saves a service call.

Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.

Stow note: Lake Boon cottages that sit empty all winter should have the gas shut off at the appliance valve before closing up. If you’re not sure where that valve is or whether it still holds, we can check it when we’re there.

Washing Machines and Dryers…

You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.

For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe to code. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run short and straight to avoid lint buildup.

Stow note: for Lake Boon cottages, we recommend draining the washer hoses and the pump before winter shutdown. Water left sitting in the pump housing freezes and cracks. We can winterize the whole kitchen in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plumbing in Stow

Every three months. Stow well water pushes fine sediment and iron particles through the aerator screen, and once it’s partially clogged your water pressure drops noticeably. Unscrew the aerator, rinse the screen, screw it back. If you’re doing it every month and the flow is still weak, the buildup has moved into the cartridge — we can swap it.

Mineral scale is binding the cartridge inside the valve body. Stow’s well water carries dissolved calcium and iron that deposit on the moving parts. The handle gets progressively stiffer until it seizes — usually at the worst possible moment. A cartridge replacement restores smooth operation. If the valve body itself is corroded, replacement is the better call.

Yes, but choose a septic-safe model and be disciplined about what goes down it. No coffee grounds, no eggshells, no potato peels, no grease. Your septic system doesn’t care that the disposal ground it up — it still has to break it down in the tank. We can recommend the right unit and walk you through what’s safe.

Sediment settles in the low points of the drain line over winter when nothing is flowing. The first few weeks of spring use push that sediment into a partial clog. A drain cleaning at the start of the season clears it. We also recommend running water through every fixture for five minutes when you open the cottage — it flushes the pipes before the sediment can compact.

Shut off the main water valve, open the kitchen faucet to drain the lines, and disconnect the supply lines under the sink. Pour RV antifreeze into the P-trap so the water seal doesn’t freeze and crack. If you have a dishwasher, run a short cycle with antifreeze in the bottom. Or call us and we’ll winterize the whole cottage in one visit.

Stainless steel, 16 to 18 gauge. Iron stains wipe off with a sponge. Composite granite is a close second — the dark colors hide mineral spots well. Avoid white porcelain on well water unless you enjoy scrubbing rust rings every weekend. We can walk you through the options when you’re ready to upgrade.

That’s bacteria feeding on organic matter in the drain pipe — common in Stow homes where well water sits in the trap during low-use periods. It’s not your well. A drain cleaning and a bleach rinse of the trap usually eliminates it. If the smell comes back fast, the vent stack may be partially blocked. We can clear it.

Same day. A burst supply line under the sink, a disposal that’s flooding the cabinet, a gas smell near the stove — we route a truck immediately. We’re based in Hudson, so most Stow addresses are under 20 minutes away.
