The Kitchen Business...

Richard T. Curley Plumbing & Heating has handled kitchen plumbing in Marlborough since 1980. Same-day service for kitchen faucets, sinks, garbage disposals, dishwashers, gas stoves, washing machines, and dryers. We never sell you something you don't need. Call (978) 562-3736.

Marlborough kitchens don’t all look the same. The Victorians near downtown have galley kitchens with plumbing from three different decades. The condo buildings on the west side share waste stacks and have HOA rules about what you can and can’t install. The split-levels and ranches out toward the Sudbury line have kitchens that were remodeled in the 90s and are due for another round. We work in all of them.

Marlborough runs on municipal water. No well sediment to deal with, which is nice — but the chlorine the city uses to treat the supply eats rubber seals and flappers faster than untreated water would. A faucet cartridge that lasts twelve years on a well might last eight here. We account for it.

Kitchen Sinks and Drains...

Kitchen Sinks… We install single and double-bowl stainless steel, cast iron, and composite sinks. For Corian and granite countertops, we coordinate with your installer for under-mount mounting.

Kitchen Drain Problems… Drain problems in Marlborough are different from the well-water towns we serve. Here, the clogs are usually organic — grease, food, soap buildup — not mineral scale. The fix is the same: a mechanical drain cleaning that clears the full pipe, not a bottle of something from the hardware store.

For older downtown homes: if your kitchen still has the original galvanized drain line, it’s likely narrowed with rust and scale. We can replace the section under the sink with PVC while keeping the rest intact — no full-house repipe needed.

Kitchen Faucets...

Kitchen Faucet Problems… A dripping kitchen faucet in Marlborough is usually a worn cartridge or a failing O-ring. The chlorine in the municipal water degrades rubber parts over time, and eventually the seal lets water through. We can swap the cartridge in under an hour for most brands — Delta, Moen, Kohler, we carry the common ones on the truck. If the valve body is corroded or the finish is worn through, replacement makes more sense. We’ll tell you which one before we start.

For condo owners: some Marlborough associations require specific finishes or brands to keep units consistent. We can work within those rules.

Garbage Disposals...

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems… New installations, replacements, jammed units — we handle all of it. Marlborough is on municipal sewer, which means no septic restrictions on disposals. Any model works, any brand. That said, a disposal is still a convenience, not a trash can. We recommend InSinkErator and Waste King, and we can install whatever you pick.

For condo owners: check your building’s rules before adding a disposal where one doesn’t exist. Some older Marlborough condo buildings have waste stacks that weren’t designed for ground-up food waste.

Dishwashers, Gas stoves washing machine and dryers...

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.

Marlborough note: condo dishwashers share drain stacks with the units above and below. If your dishwasher drains slow and the sink is fine, the shared stack may be the issue. We can scope the drain and tell you whether the problem is in your unit or the building.

Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.

Marlborough note: the older Victorians downtown sometimes have gas lines that were run decades ago for a freestanding range. The shutoff may be behind the stove in a recessed box. We’ll locate it, test it, and replace it if it’s seized — before the new stove goes in.

Washing Machines and Dryers… You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.

For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe to code. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run short and straight.

Marlborough note: condos with in-unit laundry often have tight vent runs that make sharp turns inside the wall. If your dryer takes two cycles to dry a load, the vent is likely restricted. We can clean it or reroute it if the building allows.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Plumbing in Marlborough

We’re based in Hudson, just minutes from Marlborough. For an active kitchen leak — a burst supply line, a disposal flooding the cabinet — we route a truck immediately. Most Marlborough calls get a plumber on site within an hour.

Two common causes in Marlborough. One: chlorine in the municipal water has pitted the valve seat inside the faucet body, so the new cartridge can’t form a perfect seal. Two: the replacement cartridge was the wrong one — some faucet models have mid-production changes that make cartridge matching tricky. We can diagnose it in minutes and tell you whether it’s fixable or time for a new faucet.

Sometimes. Condo buildings use shared risers and waste stacks, so water pressure and drain capacity are shared across units. A faucet that works fine in a single-family home might perform differently on the fourth floor. We know the condo stock in Marlborough and we’ll make sure the fixture matches the building before we install.

Yes — and we do it carefully. Some of those downtown Victorians still have sections of cast-iron or galvanized drain line that are thin from decades of use. We won’t run a heavy cable through a fragile pipe without warning you first. In most cases we can clear the clog without damaging the line. If the pipe is too far gone, we’ll show you before we recommend replacing the section.

If your condo shares a vent stack with the unit above or below, cooking odors can travel through the plumbing vents when the other unit runs its exhaust fan or disposal. It’s not a health hazard, but it’s annoying. A check valve on your sink’s vent connection can stop it. We’ve fixed this in several Marlborough buildings.

A basic stainless steel sink swap runs $400 to $600 including labor. If you’re changing the sink configuration — going from a double bowl to a single, or an over-mount to an under-mount — the cost goes up because the drain plumbing and mounting hardware change. We quote it before we start

Usually yes — Marlborough is on municipal sewer — but check your building’s rules. Some older buildings have waste stacks sized for sink drainage only. Adding a disposal without checking can cause problems for units below you. We can look at the plumbing and tell you if it’ll work.

A faucet that drips and a disposal that hums but won’t spin, often on the same call. The faucet needs a cartridge. The disposal is usually jammed — we free it up with an Allen wrench in about 30 seconds. If it burned out the motor trying to spin, we swap the unit.
