PLUMBING & HEATING
Maynard kitchens run small. The mill houses off Main Street, the capes on the side streets, the converted multi-family units downtown — they all share the same challenge: a kitchen you can barely turn around in, with plumbing that hasn’t been touched in thirty years. Tight under-sink cabinets, narrow stud bays, and shutoff valves that haven’t been turned since the Carter administration. We work in these kitchens every week. Nothing surprises us anymore.
Maynard is on municipal water. No iron stains, no sediment-clogged aerators — but the chlorine keeps our calendar full because it degrades rubber seals and gaskets faster than untreated water. A faucet that would last twelve years on a well might start dripping at eight or nine here. We carry the cartridges to fix it.

Kitchen Sinks… We install single and double-bowl stainless steel, cast iron, and composite sinks. Maynard’s municipal water means you don’t have to worry about iron stains, so sink material is mostly about preference and durability. Stainless steel in 16 or 18 gauge handles hot pans and resists scratching. Composite granite is quieter. Cast iron with enamel looks great but weighs enough that the cabinet needs reinforcement.
Kitchen Drain Problems… Kitchen drain clogs in Maynard are usually organic — grease, food particles, soap — not mineral scale. That said, the older mill houses sometimes have original cast-iron drain lines
Kitchen Faucet Problems… A dripping kitchen faucet in Maynard is usually a worn cartridge or a failed O-ring — the chlorine in the town water takes its toll. We can swap the cartridge in under an hour on most Delta, Moen, and Kohler models. If the valve body is pitted or the finish is shot, replacement costs less than chasing repairs. We’ll give you a straight answer either way.
For those tight Maynard mill-house kitchens: a single-hole faucet with a compact deck plate saves space under the cabinet and on the countertop. Pull-down sprayers can work in a small sink, but we measure first. Some of those cabinets barely have room for the supply lines, let alone a full-size faucet shank.

We can handle all of your garbage disposal problems…New installations, replacements, jammed units — we do all of it. Maynard is municipal sewer, so no septic restrictions. Any disposal works. If you’re adding a disposal where the kitchen has never had one, we run the electrical to a new switch and tie the disposal into the existing drain. In those tight mill-house cabinets, we mount it as close to the sink as possible to keep the under-sink space usable.

Dishwashers… For dishwashers, you buy the appliance and have it delivered. We disconnect the old unit before the truck shows up — most of the time we can schedule it so we’re there when the old one comes out and back when the new one goes in, same day. We connect the water supply, the drain line, and the electrical, then run a test cycle to confirm no leaks and proper drainage.
Maynard note: in the mill houses, dishwasher space is tight. Some kitchens can only fit an 18-inch compact unit. Measure the opening before you buy — we’ve had to send homeowners back to the appliance store more than once. If you’re not sure, call us and we’ll measure before you spend a dime.
Gas Stove… Same process — you buy the stove and schedule delivery. We disconnect the old gas line before the crew arrives so they can haul the old unit away. We return to connect the new stove, check every fitting with a gas sniffer, and confirm the burners light properly.
Maynard note: multi-family units often have gas shutoffs in odd locations — behind access panels, in the basement ceiling, or behind the stove itself with almost no clearance. We’ve seen them all. We’ll find it and test it before the new stove hooks up.
Washing Machines and Dryers… You purchase the units and arrange delivery. On install day, we connect the washing machine hoses to the hot and cold supplies, attach the drain hose, and level the machine. We check both hoses for leaks before we leave.
For a gas dryer, we run the gas connection and install the vent pipe to code. For an electric dryer, the vent only — the 220V outlet is an electrician’s job. We keep the vent run short and straight.
Maynard note: in older mill houses, the laundry hookup is often in the basement with a drain line that ties into an old cast-iron stack. If the washer drains slow or gurgles, the stack may be partially clogged. We can snake it while we’re installing the new machines.
We’re based in Hudson, just a mile or two from Maynard. A burst supply line, a disposal that’s flooding the base cabinet, a gas smell near the stove — we route a truck immediately. Most Maynard calls are under fifteen minutes.
A single-hole faucet with a low-profile deck plate is usually the answer. In Maynard’s mill houses, the under-sink cabinets are often barely wide enough for two hands and a wrench. Pull-down sprayers can work if the sink is at least 22 inches deep, but we measure before you buy. We’ve installed faucets in cabinets you’d swear were built for a dollhouse.
Chlorine in Maynard’s municipal water degrades the rubber seals and O-rings inside the cartridge. It’s not a defect — it’s chemistry. The faucet can look brand new on the outside and still drip because the internal seals are shot. A cartridge replacement stops it. If it keeps happening every few years, switching to a ceramic-disc faucet usually breaks the cycle.
Yes. Some of Maynard’s older mill houses and capes still have sections of cast-iron drain line under the kitchen. They’re thinner than they were in 1920, but we can usually clear the clog without hurting the pipe. We won’t run a heavy cable through a fragile line without telling you first. If the pipe is too far gone, we’ll show you and quote the replacement.
The washing machine is pulling air through the kitchen sink trap because the shared vent stack is partially blocked or the drain line is starting to clog. It’s common in Maynard homes where the kitchen and laundry share a wet wall. We clear the vent and snake the drain — the gurgle stops when air can move freely.
Usually yes — relocating a sink means moving water supply and drain lines, which is a plumbing modification under Massachusetts code. We pull permits when they’re required and handle the inspection. You don’t need to talk to the town yourself.
Yes, Maynard is municipal sewer so there are no disposal restrictions. But check with your landlord or condo association first — some multi-family buildings have waste stacks that weren’t designed for ground-up food. We can look at the plumbing and tell you if the existing drain can handle it.
A dripping faucet, a disposal that hums, and a sink that drains slowly. The faucet needs a cartridge, the disposal is jammed, and the drain is lined with years of grease. We can usually fix all three in one visit.
